Application

The Life Science Zurich – PhD Program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics aims to attract ambitious and talented students who are interested in the methodological foundations of clinical and population-based biomedical research. Besides the applicants' qualifications, the availability of adequate PhD positions at a given time is a main criterion for successful acceptance. Students accepted into the program will perform their research project in one of the associated research groups, according to their scientific interest and available positions.

Required qualifications:

• A Master's degree (MSc) or equivalent from a university before starting the PhD Program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
• Master thesis / MPH thesis equivalent to 30 ECTS or 900 research hours.
• Excellent knowledge of English.

Application procedure:

All applications have to be addressed to the Life Science Zurich Graduate School. There are two application deadlines per year, May 1 and November 1. To proceed to the application please click here.

Applications are evaluated by an admission committee. Selected candidates are then invited for an online interview.

Final acceptance depends on:

1. passing the program admission interview
2. getting a job offer of a PhD position in one of the participating research groups
3. satisfying the formal admission requirements of UZH or ETHZ.

Candidates with own funding can be accepted if they pass the admission interview and find a PhD supervisor in one of the research groups. Accepted candidates should start their work within six months of acceptance to the program.

If you already have a PhD position:
Candidates who already have a PhD position with a PI who is a member of the PhD program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics can apply directly for admission to the program. For more information on the procedure contact the Program Coordinator.

How often can you apply?

If your application got rejected, you are welcome to apply a second time to a PhD program of the LSZGS. However, please be aware that we will not accept a third application.

In case you have been shortlisted and have attended the interviews you cannot apply a second time irrespective of whether you have successfully passed or failed the admission interview.

In case you successfully passed the admission interview but you cannot find a job position within 6 months, you will lose your membership at the Life Science Zurich Graduate School.
